A Royal Egyptian Steatite Scaraboid, Third Intermediate Period, ca. 1069 - 945 BCE, set as a pendant

EA2351

Inscribed on both sides, this fine steatite scaraboid shows a Bes figure on one side, and the royal prenomen, User-maat-re on the other.  The scaraboid has been drilled vertically and set as a pendant.

Note:  Several Third Intermediate Period kings had User-maat-re as a prenomen, so most probably the name on this piece refers to one of them.   It is unlikely to refer to Ramesses II or any of the Ramesses of the 20th Dynasty as it is not combined with any epithet.

Dimensions:  Length: 1.2 cm (0.47 inches)

Condition:  Intact and in excellent condition overall, set as a modern pendant with a 14K gold post and strung on an adjustable 18" chain of 18K yellow gold.

Provenance:  Private Maryland collection of a diplomat, acquired while serving in Egypt between 1949 and 1956, and then by descent.
