Carved from steatite and pierced longitudinally for suspension, here the scaraboid back itself is replaced by the finely modeled features of a couchant lion, carved in high relief. He rests on a round base that is beautifully incised with text that no doubt was used to serve as a seal that reads: “All veneration and praise of the palace" - referring to the Royal palace. Such seals are rare to find and this example probably dates to around the time of Amenhotep III.

Medium: Steatite

Dimensions: Length: 1.1 cm (0.43 inches)

Condition: The scaraboid is intact and in very fine condition overall.

Provenance: Private collection of Theodore Pratt (1920 - 1998), Maryland acquired while serving in Egypt as a diplomat between 1949 and 1956, and then by descent to his daughter, Laurian Fasano (nee Pratt).
