Mina Mina Jukurrpa (Dreaming)
Artist: Margaret Napangardi Brown (1940 - 2013)

Region: Yuendumu, Central Australia
Language Group: Anmatyerre.
Medium: Acrylic on Linen
Date: 2011

Dimensions: 118 cm (46.5”) x 81 cm (32”)

The Jukurrpa story tells of the journey of a group of women of all ages who traveled to the east gathering food, collecting ‘ngalyipi’ (snake vine), and performing ceremonies as they traveled. The women began their journey at Mina Mina where ‘karlangu’ (digging sticks) emerged from the ground. Taking these implements the women traveled east creating Janyinki and other sites. Their journey took them far to the east beyond the boundaries of Warlpiri country. The painting is created in strong bold colors: orange, blue, purple, and bright yellow, those tones of color.

Biography

Margaret Napangardi Brown was born in 1940 at Mount Doreen Station, an extensive cattle breeding station about 55 km west of Yuendumu, on the way to Nyirripi, in the Northern Territory. She is the eldest of four children, who have all passed away. She remembers traveling around with her family, being taught in the traditional way about her country by her parents. Margaret now lives in Nyirripi, an Aboriginal Community 460 kms north-west of Alice Springs, in the Central Desert of Australia. Margaret married Pegleg Jampijinpa, a successful Pintupi artist who passed away in early 2006. Margaret paints her great grand-father’s Jukurrpa stories, Dreamings that relate to their land, its features, and the animals and plants that live on the land. These stories have been passed down for millennia.
