A fine Roman Signet Ring with Athena intaglio, ca 1st century AD

high karat hollow ancient gold ring with red jasper intaglio depicting the bust of Athena, (Minerva) goddess of wisdom, in profile, wearing a helmet with flowing crest.

Finger rings were worn widely by Roman men and women.  Gold rings were a badge of rank for equestrians, and rings with carved stones were used to seal documents.  Others were magic charms to ward off bad luck.  For ring style compare:  Patricia F.
