in this gem of fiery orange carnelian, a ram's head is finely carved in half left profile and features a large, curling and textured horn. It has been set in an 18K gold ring decorated with fluting that tapers toward the bottom of the band.
Featured prominently in many ancient societies, the ram has been a long held symbol of strength, determination, action, initiative and leadership. For the Romans, the ram's head was thought of as an emblem of good fortune and was equated with the Egyptian high god Amun after Rome conquered Egypt. Jupiter Ammon, one of the many versions of Jupiter, was represented either in the form of a ram, or as a human being with the head of a ram (Herod. l. c. ;Strab. xvii. p. 812);
