A Roman Candlestick Ungentarium ca. 2nd century AD

dark green glass round bodied unguentarium; tall slender neck, flared rim folded up and flattened. Good iridescence, with deposits to one side, concave base.

Condition: Complete, chip to top of wide rim, small crack to base and rejoined at neck otherwise in very good condition. With remaining deposits and iridescence in areas.

Dimensions: Height: 14 cm (5 1/2 in)

Provenance:  Forming part of the James Stephan collection assembled in the 1950's to early 1960's and then by descent.  Dr. Stephan was an archaologist excavating in the Anatolian region of Turkey during this time and acquired his collection from dealers and villagers throughout the region.
