A Roman Unguentarium with Globular Body, 1st century AD

Pale blue/green glass vessel, with a flat base, globular body, wide tubular neck and spreading rim. 

Reference:  Hayes J. W. Roman and Pre-Roman Glass in the Royal Ontario Museum. Toronto, 1975, cat. # 222.  Susan H. Auth "Ancient Glass at the Newark Museum from the Eugene Schaefer collection" (1976).

Condition: This piece is intact and in excellent condition with slight mineral accumulation and lovely iridescence covering the outside.

Dimensions: Height 5.75 inches ( 14.5 centimeters)

Provenance: Forming part of the James Stephan Snr. collection, assembled in the late 1960's and then by descent.  Dr. Stephan was an archaeologist excavating in the Anatolian region of Turkey and during this time he assembled his collection from dealers and villagers throughout the Near East.
