A heavy Roman Bronze Masons Bob, ca. 2nd century BC/AD

Think of the stories this Masons bob could tell!  From the Latin  plumbum, this rare conical masons bob, has a pointed tip on the bottom and delta perforation at the top for suspension. Precisely cast  and balanced using the lost wax method, such plumbum were suspended from a string and used as a vertical reference line, or plumb-line to ensure constructions were "plumb", ie: vertical and perpendicular to any level plane.  Still in use today, surveyors sometimes use plumb bobs for lining up points or transferring them.

Condition:  The plumbum is intact and in excellent condition overall, there are iron accretions near the point probably from burial near iron object(s).   Included with museum quality custom mount (shown).

Dimensions:  Height:  3 5/8 inches (9.2 cm)  Weight:  10oz (290g).

Provenance:  Private collection of C.K., United Kingdom, acquired prior to 1980's.
