A Phrygian Terracotta Skyphos, ca. 1200 - 700 BC

thin walled buff clay, with dark brown slip, wide rim, the rounded body tapering down to a narrow disc foot a decorative line around the lower diameter of the body, with appliedhandles that arch slightly upward.

Condition:  Intact with chip to rim and loss to the slip, otherwise in very good condition overall.  A nice example.

Dimensions:  Height: 3.15 inches (8.01 cm), Diameter at widest area:  3.25 inches (8.25 cm)

Provenance:  Forming part of the James Stephan Snr. collection, assembled in the 1950's to early 1960's and then by descent.  Dr. Stephan was a US intelligence officer who also held a degree in archaeology.  He was posted in the Anatolian region of Turkey with the US government during this time, and acquired his collection from dealers and villagers throughout the region.
