A rare Mesopotamian Snake Head Seal, Jamdat Nasr period, ca 3100-2900 BC

of carved black steatite, the seal in the form of a snakehead, with two eyes on either side and the horizontal piercing serves for a mouth, the patterning to the underside of the head articulated by a series of engraved lines.

Condition: Intact and in excellent condition overall. 

Dimensions: 22mm x 21mm

Provenance: Forming part of the James Stephan Snr. collection, and then by descent.  Dr. Stephan was a US intelligence officer who also held a degree in archaeology.  He was posted in the Anatolian region of Turkey during the late 1960's with the US government and during this time acquired his collection from dealers and villagers throughout the region.
