A Megarian-ware Decorated Bowl, Hellenistic Period, ca 2nd century BC

the body of hemispherical form with moulded acanthus petals, palmette and rosette pattern, foliage circling the base, and the head of medusa in tondo on the base, a band of egg-and-dart below the rim.
Condition:  Complete, with hairline crack to one side and losses to the glaze, root mark traces in the interior, otherwise in very good condition.  A truly charming piece.

Provenance: Forming part of the James Stephan Snr. collection, assembled in the late 1960's and then by descent.  Dr. Stephan was a US intelligence officer who also held a degree in archaeology. He was posted in the Anatolian region of Turkey with the US government during this time, and acquired his collection from dealers and villagers throughout the region.
