A Greek Apulian Red Figure Pyxis, Magna Graecia, ca. 4th century BC

A terracotta lidded pyxis of black metallic glaze, the lid with large knob handle and decorated with the heads of two "ladies of fashion" shown in profile and wearing a single strand pearl necklace, dangling earrings and ornate headwear.  Two stylized palmettes separate the heads and a wave pattern decorates the outer rim, the base is slipped in good black glaze.

Dimensions:  height: 3 3/4 inches (9.5 cm), lid diameter:  3 5/8 inches (9.1 cm)

Condition:  A few minor chips to the knob and a rim chip, rejoined from five original pieces with two areas of restoration.

Provenance:  Private Californian collection, acquired in the 1980's.
