An Apulian Red-Figure Lebes Gamikos, Magna Grecia, ca. 4th century BC

with pedestal foot and characteristic high loop handles, the body beautifully decorated in red on a black background with opposing scenes; the obverse with the figure of a seated woman swathed in a long himation and holding a large patera,  the reverse with a seated lady, naked to the waist and wearing a long robe, necklace and bracelets, a large palmette to below handle sides as well as rosettes and vegetal devices in the field, both scenes embellished with white.

Condition: Lid missing, the vase in overall good condition with repair to handle (no restoration), and minor scratches and wear.

Provenance:  Private Providence, RI collection, acquired from Bernheimer's, Cambridge, Ma. in the early 1980's.
