A Red-Figure Xenonware Kantharos with Duck, Magna Grecia, ca. 4th century BC

a miniature black glazed pottery jar features a charming red-figured painted decoration of a duck and duckling on either side of the vessel, the duckling shown with an additional decorative element of half palmettes. With a flared wide rim, exaggerated double handles, and rounded body tapering down to a narrow foot; the double handles are beautifully angled in profile and arch upward gracefully, connecting the gently sloping shoulder to the neck of the vessel. 

Condition : small chip to the rim together with minor scratches to the body that do not detract, otherwise intact and in very good condition overall.
