An Attic black figure lekythos, ca 5th Century BC

The shoulder ornamented with two bands of radiating strokes, the body decorated with a racing charioteer with cream slip and incised detail.  Used to hold oil for personal use.

Condition: Clean break to neck that has been professionally rejoined, some loss of glaze with heavy deposits particularly to the upper part of the vessel, otherwise intact and in good condition overall.

Dimensions:  Height: 15cm (6in).

Provenance: Forming part of the James Stephan Snr. collection, and then by descent.  Dr. Stephan was a US intelligence officer who also held a degree in archaeology.  He was posted in the Anatolian region of Turkey in the late 1960's with the US government and during this time acquired his collection from dealers and villagers throughout the region..
