* A Greek Gold Hercules Club Pendant, Hellenistic Period, ca. 3rd - 1st Century BCE

GJ809

this pendant is formed from high karat gold sheet over a white clay base.  The shaft is decorated with four vertical rows of intricate filigree loops, a granule is applied to the base and a suspension loop to the top.

The Hercules club pendant was not uncommon in the 1st century AD and speaks to the Greek mythical hero's popularity in the lands around the Black Sea.  His exploits are depicted on a number of Scythian objects.  This pendant finds parallels in examples recovered in and around the ancient Greek coastal city of Tauric Chersonesos.

Dimensions: Length: 1 1/2  inches (3.8 cm)
