* An Egyptian Wooden Mummy Mask, 21st Dynasty, ca. 1069 - 945 BCE
Sensitively carved, the lovely oval face colored with yellow pigment to identify with the god's skin of gold, and applied over a layer of gesso, a well-shaped nose with recessed nostrils and a delicately carved mouth that forms a slight smile. The dark cosmetic brows surmount large almond-shaped eyes that are outlined in black pigment. The remaining wig preserves an alternating border design of blue and red pigment surmounted by red dots and ornamented with a scarab of black pigment.
Condition: Age-related cracks in the wood, flaking on the stucco layer, otherwise in very good condition. Mounted on a base with a back wall. A lovely example.
Dimensions: Height: 10 1/2 inches (26.5 cm)
Provenance: From JS private collection, southern Germany, acquired in the English art trade in the 1970s - 1980s.
