An Egyptian Papyrus Mummy Mask, Ptolemaic Period, ca. 2nd - 1st century BC

The rare construction from papyrus on a linen base, and brightly decorated with yellow, red, white, blue, green and black polychrome over gesso, the face gold-toned with elongated hieroglyphic eyes, black brows, cosmetic lines and large black pupils, wearing a blue tripartite echeloned wig in imitation of braids, with blue fringe framing the face along the forehead, the ears prominent, the lappets banded above the lower edge, secured with a diadem fronted by a central raised wedjat-eye and six bosses, looped and knotted in the back with descending ties, the multi-strand beaded broad collar between the lappets.  

Dimensions:  Height:  18 1/2 inches (47 cm)

Condition:  Intact with professional stabilization, a section of the polychrome at the back missing, revealing the papyrus construction below.  A rare and fine example.

Provenance:  Private European collection, thereafter private San Francisco collection acquired from Antiquarium Galleries, New York.
