An Egyptian Steatite Scarab, Second Intermediate Period, ca. 1759 - 1539 BCE

Pierced longitudinally for mounting or threading, the trapezoidal head is flanked by rectangular eyes; the side plates are irregular trapezoidal, and the clypeus (front plate) has frontal serrations and a central base notch. The raised, slender extremities have natural form and vertical hatch lines for the tibial teeth and pilosity (hair). The scarab functioned as an amulet to secure divine support and renewal for the private owner.

Dimensions: Length: 5/8 inch (1.5 cm)

Condition: With a small chip to one edge, overall intact and in good condition.

Provenance: Private Maryland collection, acquired in the 1970s
