An Egyptian Lapis Lazuli Scarab, Middle Kingdom, ca. 2060 - 1786 BCE

Finely carved from magical lapis lazuli imported from Afghanistan, the ellipsoidal form with uninscribed base, carved legs and a suture on the back to define the pronotum separation.  Such larger examples in lapis are used as heart scarabs and are not pierced.
