An Important Steatite Cylinder Seal for Sesostris III & Amenemhat III, Dynasty 12, ca. 1844 - 1841 BC

Engraved with two columns of hieroglyphs, "The Son of Re, Khakaure." Right: "The Good God, Lord of Crowns, Nimaatre." Khakaure and Nimaatre being the prenomens of Sesostris III and Amenemhet III, respectively.

Background:   In scholastic circles, there has been some question as to whether there was the traditional co-regency between this father and son with few references found  so this important seal supports the discussion for such a joint rulership.

Published:   Kaplony, P. "Die Rollsiegel des Alten Reiches II," Monumenta Aegyptiaca 3A&B , Brussels (1981) p. 539, no. 65, pl. 150.

A copy of the relevant pages of this publication can be provided upon request and will be included with the Certificate of Authenticity.

Exhibited:  The Living Torah museum, Brooklyn NY from 2007.

Condition:  Intact and in very good condition overall, deeply carved, one side weathered so text does not roll but carving can be seen well on the seal, otherwise the text crisp and clear.

Dimensions:  Height: 2.5 cm  (1 inch)

Provenance: Originally forming part of the R.H Blanchard collection, thereafter private collection of G. Michailidis (reference #2040); Anonymous sale; Sotheby's, London, 26 July 1976, private collection of Dr. Ulrich Mueller, Zurich Switzerland, published in 1981, The Living Torah museum, Brooklyn from 2006.
