A Gandhara relief fragment, Kushan period, ca. 2nd-3rd Century A.D.

in two registers, displaying scenes from the life of the Buddha, separated by columns, carved in deep relief with nine ascetics, simply clothed.

Dimensions: Length: 7 in (18 cm), Height: 5.25 in (13 cm)

Condition:  from a larger relief, weathering to the figures but overall in good condition.

Provenance:  Forming part of the private collection of Alvin M. Cohen and Elizabeth W. Cohen, Bethesda, Maryland, assembled in the 1960's and then by descent.
