A grey Stucco Head of a Buddha, Hadda, Gandhara, 4th - 5th century CE

Finely carved with meditative expression, the oval face with heavy-lidded, almond-shaped eyes, the wavy hair pulled into a topknot.  For similar examples, see Ingholt, Harold.  "Gandharan Art in Pakistan."  Pantheon Books Inc (1957) figure 253.

Condition: From a larger statue, broken at the base of the neck with loss to the right earlobe and small chip to the upper lip.  The face with light deposits, and traces of the original white and red polychrome particularly to the eye and mouth area can still be found.  Otherwise intact and in excellent condition overall.  Custom mounted.
